Send Emails
This page shows how to use the SMTP Plugin to send emails and attach files and images.
Prerequisites
A connected SMTP plugin.
Configure query
Configure the query to send email, using the following parameters:
Select the Send email from the Commands dropdown.
Specify the email address you want to send the mail from in the From email field. You can also use mustache bindings
{{}}
to dynamically set the email.In the To email(s) field, specify the email addresses to which you want to send the email. For multiple recipients, separate the addresses with commas.
Example 1: If you have a Table widget displaying user details and you want to retrieve the email addresses, you can use the following:
// Retrieve the email of the selected row in the table
{{Table1.selectedRow.email}}
// Get the emails of all users in the table
{{Table1.tableData.map(user => user.email)}}
Example 2: To get the email provided by a user in a Form widget, you can use the following code:
{{Form1.data.Input1}}
- In the CC email(s) and BCC email(s) fields, add the email addresses. Separate multiple addresses with commas, and use mustache bindings
{{}}
to dynamically set the email.
- In the Subject field, add the email's subject, for example:
Example: if you want to display a welcome message to the current Appsmith user, you can use the following code:
Welcome Aboard! {{appsmith.user.name}}
- Select the email body format from Body type field. Use HTML for formatted emails with images and links, and plain text for simple, text-based messages.
Example:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>Product Info</title>
</head>
<body>
<section>
<!-- Display the name of the selected row from Table1 -->
<h1>Name: {{Table1.selectedRow.name}}</h1>
<p>Date of Purchase: {{Form1.data.DatePicker1}}</p>
<p>Status: {{Form1.data.Select1}}</p>
<p>This is the description of the content. It provides more details about what this is all about.</p>
</section>
<!-- Display an image using a URL -->
<img src="https://assets.appsmith.com/widgets/default.png" alt="Text">
<!-- Add a clickable button that links to https://example.com -->
<a href="https://example.com" className="action-button">Click Me</a>
<footer>
<p>If you have any questions, feel free to reply to this email or contact our support team.</p>
</footer>
</body>
</html>
You can create multiple templates, and use JS to conditionally execute a specific template based on dynamic criteria or user interactions.
Add attachments
To send emails with various attachments, such as files, PDFs, and images, you can do so with the Filepicker widget or by specifying a URL for uploading the desired files.
Using Filepicker
If you want to upload files from your local machine, you can use the Filepicker widget, as shown below:
Drag a Filepicker widget and configure the Allowed file types property to specify the file formats that users can upload.
Select your Data format based on the file type.
In the Attachment(s) field of the SMTP query, add the following code to upload files:
// Accessing file data
[{{FilePicker1.files[0]}}]
//here [0] represents index of the file.
Using URL
If you want to upload a file from a URL, create a JavaScript function using JSObject to fetch and convert the file data to base64 format.
- In JSObject, add a function to handle file uploads from a URL, like:
// Define a function to handle file uploads from a URL
export default {
file: async (url = Table1.selectedRow.avatar) => {
// Make an API request to fetch the file data from the URL
await Api1.run({ url });
// Extract file metadata
const type = Api1.responseMeta.headers['Content-Type'][0];
const data = type.includes('image') ? Api1.data : btoa(Api1.data);
// Prepare the file object with required details
return {
type,
size: 1, // Set an appropriate size value
name: url.substr(url.lastIndexOf('/') + 1), // Extract the file name from the URL
dataFormat: 'base64',
data: `data:${type};base64,${data}`,
};
},
};
The provided function asynchronously fetches file data from a URL using an API request, extracts metadata such as type and size, and returns a file object with base64-encoded data.
In the REST API query, set the URL as:
{{this.params.url}}
, which dynamically adjusts the file URL based on specific criteria, such as the selected row on Table.In the Attachment(s) field of the SMTP query, add the following code to fetch data from JSObject.
[{{JSObject1.file.data}}]
Setup email trigger
Once your query is configured, you can send emails by executing the query in response to a specific event, such as clicking a button or when files are uploaded using a Filepicker.
Set the onClick event of the Form widget's Submit button to execute the send email query.
Set the onSuccess callback to show the success alert.
